Wilfred Carr is an Emeritus Professor in the Philosophy of Education at the University of Sheffield, where, for many years, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and The Head of the School of Education.

Wilfred Carr is an Emeritus Professor in the Philosophy of Education at the University of Sheffield, where, for many years, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and The Head of the School of Education. He is also an honorary vice -president of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain and an Honorary Professor of the University of Sydney, Australia. His main research interests are in a range of questions concerning the relationship between educational theory and educational practice. He is also interested in the philosophy, history and methodology of educational research and, in particular, the philosophy and methodology of educational action research. These questions include:

  • What is educational theory?
  • What is educational practice?
  • What is the role of ’theory’ in the education and training of teachers?
  • Can educational research be scientific?
  • What contribution does educational research make to the professional development and training of teachers?
  • How should ‘educational studies’ be organised and understood within the context of teacher education?
